Software Engineer - Level 2

At AMD&E, software engineers are responsible for programming assembly lines, robotic devices, or other manufacturing processes using programmable logic controllers (PLC). Along with Industrial programming, AMD&E software engineers also provide custom programming solutions using Python, C++, and Javascript at times. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented, logical thinker who enjoys working with different machines in combination with computers. Accelerated designs, manufacturers, and builds high value systems for industries such as life sciences, energy, aerospace, and medical to name a few.

We are recruiting for Level 2 and Level 3 Software Engineers with experience designing and supporting software systems throughout the product lifecycle. Compensation ranges from $55,000/yr to $85,000/yr depending on skill set and experience. Competitive benefits include 2 weeks paid time off, 8 paid holidays, matching 401K, and contributions toward employee health insurance.

Software engineers at AMD&E commonly use some of the following tools and languages. 

Programming Languages 

  • Ladder Logic, Sequential function charts, function block diagram, and structured text
  • Python
  • C++
  • Javascript 

Automation Software

  • Mitsubishi (GX Works 3, GX Works 2, GX Developer, GT Designer, RT Toolbox, MR Configurator, FR Configurator) 
  • Rockwell (Studio 5000 Logix Designer, RS Logix 5000, RS Logix 500, Factory Talk View Studio)
  • National Instruments (LabView)

Your role will be to design and implement software and logic for equipment, robotics, and electro-mechanical hardware for our projects. You will work with our team of engineers, designers, and technicians to create outstanding results for our customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Development of functional descriptions, flowcharts, and logic maps
  • PLC Logic Design
  • Software development for HMI and custom user interface applications.
  • Attend meetings to help flush out design and give opinions on software strategies. 
  • Examples of commonly used communication protocols: 
    • MODBUS
    • TCP/IP
    • Ethernet/IP
    • UART
    • RS-232
    • RS-485
    • RS-422
  • Create & present professional technical reports. 
  • Help develop software development standards.
  • Programming servo drives and frequency drives.
  • Programming and integration of electrical hardware for industrial equipment
  • Microcontroller programming
  • Firmware and software design
  • SCADA and Database design
  • Robot Programming
  • Field support On-Site or Remote and service of Accelerated Equipment
  • Testing of new circuits or systems
  • In House Machine startup (Validate Electrical/Mechanical Components)
  • On-Site Machine startup & signoff of Accelerated Equipment at customer facility
  • Machine Manual Documentation
  • Troubleshooting and repair of legacy automation and CNC equipment
  • Identifies areas of risk and takes steps to mitigate them.
  • Take ownership of project tasks to ensure client satisfaction.
  • Must be an Effective communicator verbal and written.
  • To ensure that controls and logic programs developed are efficient and that they adhere to the standards and needs of the customer and AMD&E.
  • Travel to and from customer facilities will be required from time to time. This will not be your primary responsibility, but it is unavoidable at times. The amount of travel required will depend on the projects and the clients that we are supporting. A good rule of thumb is less than 20% of a project is spent traveling. 

Experience

  • 2-5 years of hands-on experience in Controls Engineering or relevant programming experience. 
  • Python, C++, or Javascript experience preferred.
  • Comfortable laying out complex process program structures.
  • Experience working with and programming Programmable Logic Controllers.
  • Experience commissioning machines including, IO Checkout, Ethernet IP device setup, Machine Safety Setup, and testing.
  • Experience and knowledge of Machine Safety design and requirements. (Robot safeties, operator safeties, experience with programming various safety PLCs, and device such as area scanners.) 
  • Ability to read Electrical prints and thorough understanding of controls and design principals. 
  • Ability and desire to learn new skills and practices. 
  • Self-motivated and strong work ethics
